Bread is the second most important supplier of energy (kilojoules) in the South African diet after maize products. Apart from bread, bakers also produce other products like biscuits, pies and pizzas.

Local business environment

South Africa manufactured 3 191 543 tons of wheaten products in the months October 2022 – August 2023. SA imported a further 30 211 tons and exported 28 209 tons (SAGIS, 2023).

South Africa’s bread basket in the months October 2022 – August 2023 comprised of 52.9% white bread, 46.2% brown bread, 0.9% wholewheat, with a negligible percentage “other”. The units numbered 1 161 443 964 loaves white bread; 1 015 500 386 loaves brown bread; and 18 833 439 loaves wholewheat bread (SAGIS, 2023). A total of 2 196 895 175 units of bread was baked. This excludes bread baked in the non-commercial sector.

Bread flour manufactured in the months October 2022- August 2023: white – 1 223 262 ton (76.6%); brown – 255 937 ton (16%), other flour (industrial) – 111 553 ton (7%), and whole wheat – 5 873 ton (0.3%) (Sagis, 2023).

National Regulator for Compulsory Specification (NRCS)

  • The NRCS is mandated to regulate products on behalf of government such as vehicle components and others in the interest of public safety and to ensure fair trade. It also regulates all types of perishable goods. This includes the Trade Metrology Act of 1973.
